Memory DDR3 | Test configuration and benchmarks

For testing, we used two platforms (motherboard and processor), one – based on AMD, the other – on the basis of Intel. The remaining components were identical. These include CPU cooler Hyper 212 EVO, SSD G.Skill Phoenix Pro 256GB, Seasonic power supply 750, video card Asus 290X Matrix and the operating system Win7 Ultimate.

Processor from AMD FX-8370 is installed on the motherboard Asus Crosshair V Formula Z. Chip Intel Core i7-4770K worked on the motherboard Asus Z87 Maximus VI Hero.

Benchmarks

For testing, we used the following programs:

  • Aida 64 Engineer Edition.
  • PassMark Performance Test.
  • Si-Sandra Support-Engineer 2015 (special thanks to Si-Software for the provision of pre-release versions of “2015”).
  • Geekbench 3.
  • WinRAR.
  • Prime95.

To test latency and speed read / write memory, we chose Aida. In PassMark benchmark interest us Modules Memory Mark and Database. In the Si-Sandra has delayed memory test Aggregate Memory Latency. GeekBench 3 will provide overall performance single-core and multi-core performance and WinRAR will show how much memory and frequency affect the overall system performance.

Intel system

We have included a mode XMP (eXtreme Memory Profile), which is correctly set of specifications values (2400 and timings specified by the manufacturer) for all modules except for sets of ADATA and AMD, as we used two sets (2×8 GB) to obtain volume 32 GB. This often happens when people use together separate sets of memory, even the same. Often enough to make minor adjustments of voltage and / or timing to complete sets or individual strips earned together, but it does not always help. Therefore, memory manufacturers offer such a wide range of sets 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 bars, in which they are tested for compatibility.

AMD system

Asus Crosshair V Formula Z uses DOCP (DRAM Over Clock Profile) – is, in fact, a branch or a separate species XMP, but, in contrast to XMP, which directly uses the actual timings specified in the SPD (programmed by the manufacturer), this technology is more focused to work with the frequencies. AMD motherboard can also use other overclocking profiles, for example, AMP (AMD Memory Profiles) and EOCP (Easy Over Clocking Profiles). As an exception, we used AMP to set the AMD Radeon Gaming DRAM to the factory settings 11-12-12-31, 1.65 V. Technology DOCP customize these kits as well as the rest, ie mode 11-13-13- 35, 1.65 V. This suggests that DOCP simply puts the best timings programmed memory DRR3-2400. This happens as a set CL10, and CL11, all of which work well with these settings. But as in all sets of specifications manufacturer tighter timings, we set them manually.

The nominal speed of the memory with processors AMD FX 1866 is when one module per channel and 1600 with four of the DIMM. This can be misleading as using expensive and cheap processors. We saw a lot of top-level processors with higher frequency DRAM, as well as many lower-level FX chips that could not run at a speed of memory 1866. Using different sets of modules

Using the RAM modules from different sets can lead to problems that we actually faced by adjusting modules and AMD Radeon ADATA (recall that these producers sent to two separate sets of 2×8 GB modules, we tested first). As a general rule, to make work properly mixed sets DRAM, enough to adjust the timings and / or voltage. In the case of AMD memory system booted normally and worked with the settings AMP, until we tried to run Prime95, after which the system has failed. Increasing the voltage CPU / NB (controls memory controller) by only 0.06 in the stabilized system. With a set of ADATA system does not want to boot, but after a similar increase the voltage on CPU / NB (+0,05) download is successful, but running Prime95 again led to crash. For this group, we have increased the DIMM memory voltage to 1.7 V and added to the CPU / NB is still 0.04 In order to achieve stable operation at 1.31 V (remembering about the platform Intel, also had some doubts that the installation of four bars DRAM can do without additional tweaks).

If you do not go into a lot of boring details, we have tried with varying success to combine modules in pairs of different sets of DRAM. Some of them managed to run via voltage adjustments, some by changing the timings for other combinations and took it, and more.Were combinations which do not work at all. For example, two strips Corsair in any does not want to work with two strips of Team. Then we put the remaining two modules Corsair same two modules Team, and it worked. It is not difficult to conclude that the successful combination of different memory modules – is a matter of chance. Advance is difficult to say for sure whether to work or that the combination of modules / kits.

Refusal to load

Two sets refused to load the settings from DOCP to 2400, when they were installed all four strips. For them, we have chosen the common tactics and increased the CPU multiplier to 21.5 (base processor frequency increased from 4.0 to 4.3 GHz). Small overclock possible to reduce the voltage modules ADATA back to 1.65 V, and the voltage of CPU / NB had to leave at a reduced level of 1.26 V.
