We continue to expand the list of PSUs tested by mass technique. On turn three 550-watt device in various price categories.

Models Cooler Master G550M and Chieftec BPS-550C2 certified under the standard 80 Plus Bronze. Both units are of very high power characteristics and implemented in a modular scheme. Thanks to our partner – company Regard, planned an interesting direct confrontation. In addition, we have tested a number of “bronze” BP this power, some of whom are very successful – beginners will have to fight with them.

Cooler Master V550 – the unit of a higher class, it is certified according to the standard 80 Plus Gold. For him, we also find a direct competitor. In addition, the BP claims to leadership in the overall group. Proceed to a visual inspection.

Let’s start with the youngest models Cooler Master, certified under the standard 80 Plus Bronze.

Review of Cooler Master G550M (RS-550-AMAA-B1)

The unit comes in a cardboard box of medium size: 265 x 195 x 110 mm. It is decorated similarly packaged Cooler Master B600 ver.2 (we looked at it recently) – the main colors are black and white.

Since reliability is also all right: the PSU is placed into a special form of soft cardboard, papier-mache-like cords rolled into tight bundles and laid in separate packages.

Scope of supply includes instructions, power cord and mounting screws. Here everything is familiar – a set of typical for most power supplies, regardless of the price range (only sometimes added to it the plastic cable ties).

Take a look at the device itself. In appearance, this model is much more interesting modest B600 ver.2. Even a cursory examination is possible to note some of the design elements: decorative on the side faces of the case, the original form of the fan grill.

In addition, all cords G550M provided with additional braid, so that the whole G550M looks very respectable.

Unit is equipped with two connectors PCI-e 6 + 2-pin, mounted on a cord length of 550 mm. It is very suitable for the model set capacity of 550 watts. Quality PSU this category must provide the system with top-end single GPU, but the ligament SLI / CrossFire they obviously can not handle.

Package sizes of the two products are identical Cooler Master – 265 x 195 x 110 mm. But the design is markedly different:

By design, this model is very similar to the older blocks their line (previously we saw Cooler Master V750 and V850), but in a “smaller scale”. Main features of the device outside of the series – light gray metal frame fan grill.

As one would expect, on the performance characteristics of the “gold” unit clearly superior “bronze”. Line 12 also in this case is not divided into the virtual channels. The maximum current is 45 A (against 42 And G55M), which corresponds to the power of 540 watts. The figure is close to the ideal – 98.2% of the declared capacity of the PSU.

The current in the channels 3.3 V and 5 V is limited to 20 A maximum total load – 100 watts. The unit is certified according to the standard 80 Plus Gold.

To power the periphery are encouraged to use the six x SATA (cord length 800 mm), three and one Molex Floppy (mounted on a common string of length 750 mm).

Curiously – recruitment connectors “gold” and “bronze” blocks were completely identical (up to shape and length of cords). However, it can hardly be counted as “minus” the more expensive model – rather, it is an additional plus for the G550M, which proved to be very well equipped.

Such a large number of connectors should be enough even for the “advanced” home PC with this level of consumption. Perhaps the only PCI-e connectors have a more expensive unit could be more – four. Declared power characteristics would be enough for some systems with a pair of graphics cards. However, in this segment of such a set is found only rarely.

Review Chieftec BPS-550C2

Units in this series (NTRO2 85+) also figured in previous reviews, so that the design of the package already familiar to us.

Unfortunately, this time to praise informative not work. The box is used for several PSU (note the side edge of the package – here is a list of five models), so that it provides only the most general information about the entire line. Lacks specifics – not even a table of power characteristics.

But packed unit is very reliable and accurate. The housing is protected by a dense pack of bubble wrap, cables, rolled into a tight tourniquet, play the role of additional mitigating element.

The box showed up a cloth bag with a drawstring, which is convenient to store the cords are not used to build the system. The rest of the package is the same as that of blocks Cooler Master – manual, power cable, mounting screws.

In appearance the unit is different from the older 850-watt model.

Large body allowed designers to use the chopper Chieftec size 135 x 25 mm. Theoretically, this is a significant advantage (in comparison with the usual “stodvadtsatkoy” such a fan can provide better performance at a lower noise level – at least in some modes), but in practice it all depends on the setting of the rotational speed, so do not get ahead of ourselves.

Consider the power characteristics. According to the load capacity of the line unit 12 was equal to the “golden» Cooler Master V550.The same 540 watts (98.2% of the nominal value) – an excellent result!

The strength of the current lines of 3.3 V and 5 V can reach 25 A limitation on the total load – 130 watts. Unit is certified according to the standard 80 Plus Bronze.

When considering a set of connectors surprised me that there are two connectors CPU 4 + 4-pin. This is usually equipped with a very powerful unit that can be used in dual-processor system, or in conjunction with the motherboard for extreme “nitrogen” overclocking. Modest 550-watt model is clearly not intended. Most likely, the matter of unification of production, in the same way and are equipped with the older, much more powerful units in this series. The length of the cord to the power connector of the processor – 550 mm.

Cons:

  • Significant deficiencies were observed.

Model Chieftec BPS-550C2 differs from its rivals in the noise characteristics.

Chieftec BPS-550C2

Pros:

  • High power characteristics (maximum load when tested our technique – not less than 500 W);
  • High rate of efficiency (for this category of devices) – 85-88%;
  • Very high quality stabilization;
  • All necessary connectors on system performance of a single GPU;
  • Modular design.

Cons:

  • High noise levels at a load of 300-350 W;
  • Non-standard housing dimensions (length increased by 20 mm).

Now let’s summarize and describe the first product Chieftec. Blocks like BPS-550C2, we have seen more than once: successful on a number of characteristics of the device is very noisy, which drastically reduces the overall assessment. This model has already heard at 200-250 W, and 350 W after begins now “buzz.” It should be noted that it is unlikely such a high speed fan is really needed – a large 135 mm spinner perfectly “blows” and the block at 1000 rev / min. Most likely, the designers have simply decided to play it safe. As a result – you can use this model except that in the really noisy game system, where BP will overpower the other, more “loud” components.

Cooler Master G550M fought hard with rivals in its category (BP-certified 80 Plus Bronze). The most serious opponent was the Chieftec APS-550CB. In comparison with this model G550M showed significantly better quality of stabilization, a similar level of efficiency and noise characteristics. So this is a very good “bronze” block, which can be recommended for use in gaming systems of the middle class.

Cooler Master V550 surpassed junior solution in all disciplines testing (considerably – in terms of efficiency, less visible – the quality stabilization and noise level). There is nothing to add: on a set of characteristics is the best studied of the currently 550-watt models.
