Acer has been actively developing a fairly successful series of compact laptops Aspire S over the past few years. However, by the second half of 2016, the management of the Taiwanese corporation decided not only to update the filling and finalize the appearance of the devices, it’s time to change the name of the series of laptops. In the course of the international exhibition IFA 2016, three full-featured lines under the general name Acer Swift: Swift 7, Swift 5 and Swift 3, and more recently Swift 1 were presented at once. In this review we will get acquainted with the representative of the penultimate series.
Acer Swift 3 is a classic compact laptop designed to perform a wide range of working or multimedia tasks. The manufacturer focuses on the versatility and high autonomy of the model, which should provide up to 12 hours of operation from one battery charge. The main competitive advantage of the series is an attractive price-performance ratio. The basic equipment, based on Intel Core i3 processors and 8 gigabytes of RAM, will cost the future owners only $600. The prices for more advanced versions with Intel Core i5 are in the range from $700 to $750, and the price for top versions with Intel Core i7 should not exceed the $1100 mark. All of the above models are supplied in an all-metal package and are equipped with a 14-inch IPS-screen with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. There are also options with the usual HD-resolution on the matrix TN+Film.
The delivery set of the test sample is minimal. In addition to the laptop inside the box is only a power unit with a capacity of 45 watts. Retail versions will not be much richer and will be able to offer only a few paper brochures and a short instruction manual.
The design of Swift 3 can not be called unique, but at the same time it is rather elegant and pleasing, both with its appearance and well-thought-out functionality. As the main material of the case is used brushed aluminum, so that the surface collects a minimum of fingerprints and other contaminants, and provides a pleasant tactile sensation when touching.
Contrary to the current and controversial tendency to minimize the available interfaces for connecting external peripherals, the review hero is equipped with a wide range of input/output ports. On the left side, there is a power adapter connector, an HDMI port, a classic USB 3.0 and an updated USB 3.1 Type-C.
On the right side of the laptop, there was a place for an SD card reader, headphone input, another USB (this time version 2.0), and a Kensington lock.
The webcam is placed on the upper frame of the display border. Its maximum resolution is standard for a medium-budget class of 1280×720 pixels. Support for High dynamic range imaging (HDR) technology has been announced.
The acoustic system consists of two separate speakers mounted on the edges of the case. The maximum volume level is sufficient for comfortable viewing of movies or listening to music, there is no wheezing at the same time.
Acer Swift 3 received a full-sized island-style keyboard, which is not surprising, given the 14-inch format of the device. Typing text is convenient and easy. The keys have a short and precise stroke. In addition, most of them have a slightly curved shape, which improves tactile feedback during operation. Some complications can arise with the on/off button of the laptop, which took place in the upper right corner of the main keyboard, and can be confused with the Delete key.
